Before I start I just want to say that this will be a spoiler free review. In fact all reviews will be spoiler free. So let’s get started.
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.
The main theme in this book is friendship and trust. Although the gladers can be paranoid sometimes, and can throw you out in the maze durning the night so the grievers can get you (don’t worry, that only happens if you’ve done something to disturb the society they’ve been bulding up for two years) they’re still close and they can count on each other when things get tough. When Thomas joins the group he is welcomed almost by everyone and builds a strong friendships with some of them. Chuck in particular shows a true meaning of friendship. He is kind to Thomas from the moment he came to the glade, and a stong bond is created between the two of them. They are like two brothers. They love each other but at the same time annoy one another to the point neither of them can stand the other.
Ever since I read the plot to this book i was hooked. I didn’t read it right away because i had some other things going on but when i finally picked it up, well, i couldn’t stop. I read this book in a day, and face it this book has 375 pages. I just couldn’t stop reading! Every chapter ended with a cliffhanger which made me eager to know what happened next. This book doesn’t even nearly get the attention it deserves! I often find books predictable and it feels like most of the authors follow a pattern but not this one. James Dashner had me guessing thourgh the whole story and every time i thought i figured something out he proved me wrong by throwing in a plot twist.
The best part is, the book is realistic. Okay, maybe not everything in this book is realistic but the main story is. I would honestly not be surprised if this happend in the future. There’s nothing supernatural with this book and that’s what makes it fantastic. There’s no way to explaines what happens in the book with magic since it plays out in our world but only the future where something horrible has happened.
To all the romance lovers out there, yes the book has a hint of romance but the story doesn’t revolve around that. But it is enough to make you eager for more.
This book gets 4 out of 5 planets.
The maze runner is one of my favorite books. It truly is an amazing story I recommend to all of you.
